ABSTRACT
Nowadays, Appointment of Judges in high court and supreme court became the national debate in India. The appointment of judges became a confused job. Since independence, several attempts are made to come up with a perfect system to appoint judges in high courts and supreme courts. In 1993, Collegium system was introduced as system to appoint and transfer judges. Collegium system was not perfect and had undergone with many changes after that. In 2014, the government introduced NJAC as alternative of collegium system. The Supreme court declared it unconstitutional. The government made many attempts to replace collegium system but they were unsuccessful. After this there began a tussle between government and judiciary regarding appointment of judges. The purpose of this research paper is to discuss about Collegium system in India and provide information related to the topic. Appointment of Judges is the integral part of independence of Judiciary. The paper discusses the important aspects of collegium system, evolution of collegium system, advantages and disadvantages of collegium system, controversy between judges and government and conclusion.
