Chirayu Sharma, B.A.LL.B., Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University

ABSTRACT

The paper makes the argument that China is pursuing Neo-mercantilist policies in order to advance its national interests and international influence. The promotion of nationalism and patriotism, the accumulation of gold and foreign exchange reserves, and the pursuit of a favourable balance of payments through the manipulation of exchange rates, tariffs, export subsidies, and other trade restrictions are all examples of Neo-mercantilist methods used by China. In addition, the Chinese government manages population growth for social control and national development, launches the "Belt and Road" initiative and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank to counter Western and American influences, and conducts strategic expansion in nations of Africa and South Asia, China’s economic success through neo- mercantilist tactics may encourage other emerging Asian countries like the Philippines to follow.
