Sajjan Kumar vs C.B.I on 20 September, 2010
Bench: P. Sathasivam, Anil R. Dave1
BACKGROUND
For many years, the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots have been a major story in the media. It made headlines once more when the High Court overturned the Trial Court’s ruling and sentenced former Parliament member Sajjan Kumar to life in jail. At last, the court revealed the cover- ups and declared that the events of 1984 amounted to crimes against humanity. This decision was made at the last minute, which regrettably illustrates the court officials’ incompetence in providing justice on schedule and offers valuable insights.
One of the most contentious Indian National Congress figures of his day is Sajjan Kumar. He has come a long way from being an involved politician to becoming a prickly one. He was Sanjay Gandhi’s close buddy, who facilitated his entry into politics. They resembled two minds working together. He ran for Delhi municipal elections from Madipur in 1977, and the following year he was appointed as a councilor, marking the beginning of his career. In addition, he served as the spokesperson for the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) and was appointed General Secretary. When he was elected to the 7th Lok Sabha in 1980 and placed in the Ministry of Works and Housing, his political career reached new heights.
