ABSTRACT

In India, with the world's third-largest population, experiences a significant crime rate, averaging approximately 445.9 reported offenses per 100,000 inhabitants. Consequently, prisons play a vital role in safeguarding public safety by incarcerating offenders. However, the Indian prison system faces critical challenges, including overcrowding, staff shortages, and resource limitations. These issues often remain undisclosed due to the inherent security measures of prisons. Nonetheless, prison administration must strictly adhere to legal principles to ensure that incarcerated individuals retain their fundamental human dignity. This paper will analyse the aforementioned issues plaguing Indian prison administration. The analysis will be bolstered by relevant case law. Additionally, the paper will propose potential solutions to address these concerns and the current shortcomings in prison reform initiatives.
