ABSTRACT
This paper examines the pivotal role of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) in shaping water resource management policies in India. As the country faces growing environmental challenges, including water scarcity, pollution, and over-extraction, EIAs offer a structured approach for evaluating the potential environmental impacts of water-related projects. By scrutinizing legislative frameworks, policy initiatives, and case studies, the study highlights how EIAs contribute to sustainable water management by identifying risks, suggesting mitigation measures, and promoting informed decision-making. The integration of EIAs in water resource management policies ensures that environmental considerations are balanced with developmental objectives. This paper explores how EIAs assess the environmental consequences of various water-related projects, such as dams, irrigation schemes, and industrial effluent discharges. Additionally, it discusses the evolution of EIA regulations in India and their influence on water governance, alongside major case studies like the Sardar Sarovar Dam and the Yettinahole Diversion Project, illustrating the challenges and benefits of EIAs in practice. This paper offers recommendations to strengthen the EIA process, ensuring that water resource management policies in India remain environmentally sustainable and socially equitable.
