Artificial Intelligence Law: Its Need In Today’s Consumer Marketplace

Hemant Patil, Government Law College, Mumbai

ABSTRACT

As a part of my ongoing academic education around Technology Law, this short essay is an attempt to decipher the current scenario of AI use in commercial consumer markets. The coverage includes topic introduction of consumer interface with AI in reality, factual use case of AI technologies, analysis of real-world gaps still unaddressed by Law, need for legislations protecting consumer interests and my closing remarks. Purpose of selecting this topic was twofold: One was to comply with my AI Law certification from Lund University (Sweden), and second was to begin establishing interface point of AI & Law in the real world such as consumers. While everyone is fascinated using ChatGPT these days, a few have ability to comprehend how much of the personal data is exposed without any of their consents. People are still battling with the question if AI is a friend or an enemy, without focusing on fundamental aspects of defining, regulating and enforcing boundaries to the same. Both AI and Law continue to evolve (although at different pace) and its applications touching normal human lives remain dynamic.

If we understand how deeply AI has invaded our lives through consumer e- Commerce, social media, Financial Services or healthcare, we will really be scared imagining the consequences of our unintended internet exposure. Fortunately, like it is said, late is better than never. We still are at early stage and its apt to collectively start understanding inevitability of Technology (such as AI) adoption. And while doing so, thinking, establishing legal boundaries will remain essential for enforcing Law & order in our future world.
