ABSTRACT
The dynamic landscape of financial technology (fintech) is marked by frequent mergers and acquisitions (M&A). While these deals can foster innovation and efficiency, they also raise concerns about potential anti- competitive effects. This paper explores the critical considerations for antitrust authorities in evaluating fintech M&A. We examine how the unique characteristics of fintech, such as network effects and data dominance, can lead to reduced competition and harm to consumers. The paper analyses recent regulatory interventions and evolving frameworks to assess M&A in this sector. By critically evaluating the potential benefits and drawbacks of fintech consolidation, this research aims to inform a balanced approach that safeguards competition while nurturing a thriving and innovative financial ecosystem.
