Akansha Srivastava, Vivekananda Institute of Professional Studies & Jasbir Singh, Jagran Lakecity University, Bhopal

INTRODUCTION

Domestic violence refers to the abuse on a person’s physical, sexual, emotional, financial or phycological being. It majorly happens when the other person has some power or domination over the victim. It is committed by someone in the victim’s domestic group or circle. Domestic violence is nothing new to human existence, it has been in practice since ages.

In the previous times as well when majority of the women were totally dependent on the male members of the household because they were the ones who were deprived of education since the beginning as only sons of the family were supposed to get educated and earn a living to support the family. This actually gave a superior position to men over women in the households giving more chances for domestic violence to happen. If we get into more depth, we can see factors like patriarchy still prevailing in the society which encourages such practices and basically women are more prone to domestic violence.
