An Analysis Of Green Tax In India

Swathi MV, Tamil Nadu National Law University

ABSTRACT

The world has witnessed rapid industrialization and economic development. Although, this has had positive repercussions on employment and trade, it has had adverse consequences on the environment. In a country like India, where environmental law is not wholly effective and citizens and companies primarily rely on fossil fuels and other non-sustainable technology, it is imperative to introduce a legal framework that taxes carbon emissions. It is the need of the hour to enact a legislation that taxes carbon emissions and provides subsidies and benefits for using green technology. This would also stimulate industries to invest in green technology. This would aid the Government to enact policies to ensure sustainable development. The projects undertaken by the Government as well as other private individuals in the future can make use of green and clean technology rather than using pollutants. These measures would help the country a long way in reducing its carbon emissions.

Keywords: Sustainable development, green tax, carbon emissions, green technology, taxation.
