Introduction:
One Nation One Election is a proposal to conduct elections simultaneously in India including lok sabha (parliament), state legislative assemblies, and local governing bodies. This means that the polls for Lok sabha and state assemblies will be held together. Currently election commission (EC) conducts the elections for the state and Lok sabha as separate events, however, most of the states have their own electoral cycle. some states like Odisha, Sikkim, Andhra Pradesh, and Arunachal Pradesh held elections with the Lok Sabha polls.
History of One Nation One Election in India:
When our constitution was adopted in 1950, polls to the Lok Sabha and all states were held simultaneously every five years between 1951 to 1967. India voted simultaneously for the center and states in 1952, 1957, 1962, and 1967. this process ended as new states started emerging and some old ones were reorganized it was completely discontinued after some legislative assemblies were dissolved in 1968-69. The idea to revert to simultaneous polls was suggested in the annual report of the Election Commission in 1983. Later, the Law Commission report referred to it in 1999. and again in 2018 Law Commission drafted a report backing the idea of simultaneous election.
