ABSTRACT

Drugs are chemical substances that are consumed by certain people which helps them to forget reality and enter into an illusionary world. Drug usage is emerging rapidly these days and this rapid drug usage can lead to negative social and health effects. It is a crime in which drugs or any other harmful substance are consumed or sold to any other person in small or large quantities. A recent report stated that 8,50,000 lakh people were drug users in the year 2023. The Government of India enacted The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 which prohibits/restricts any person from using, production, manufacturing, cultivation, possession, sale, purchasing, transport, storage and consumption of any narcotic drug or psychotropic substance. Section 15 to 40 of The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 deals with the punishments for the offences and penalties for a person or company that engages in the usage and trade of narcotics, drugs and psychotropic substances. The main objective is to study the reasons and effects of drug usage and abuse by youngsters in our society. The research question here is Whether Indian laws are efficient in preventing youngsters from the usage of narcotic and drug substances? The researcher has followed the empirical research method using a convenient sampling method. The sample size of the study is 200. The result observed from the study is that most people are aware of the recent trends of the youth in drug usage and abuse and the laws enacted by the government that help make society drug-free. The suggestion of this study is to increase awareness of drug abuse and make people aware of the rehabilitation centres and homes and the laws that govern and punish drug addicts.
