ABSTRACT

Glass ceiling refers to the situation in which a qualified individual who wants to move up the organizational hierarchy is prevented from doing so at a higher level owing to prejudice, most frequently based on sexism or racism. Thus, the term "glass ceiling" alludes to vertical discrimination, which most usually targets women in the workplace. The definition concentrates on top/senior management, presuming that this level experiences the glass ceiling more frequently than medium and lower grades do. The major objectives of the study are to examine the factors that prevent women from securing career advancements at the workplace and to determine ways to combat the problem of glass ceiling. The primary data for the study is collected from 200 sample respondents by using a well structured questionnaire by using convenient sampling. The independent variables are age, gender, educational qualification, occupation, marital status. The tools of analysis used in the study are pie charts, complex charts, chi square tests for meaningful analysis. Gender bias of the decision makers prevents women from securing career advancements at the workplace. Joining mixed gender support groups may help in overcoming the problem of glass ceiling. Male dominated work environments highly affect the career prospects of women.
