ABSTRACT
Food safety is a crucial aspect of public health and consumer protection, and in India, a robust legal framework is in place to ensure the safety and quality of food products. This study aims to analyze the current laws and regulations governing food safety in India, with a specific focus on their implementation and impact in Tamil Nadu. The objective is to understand the effectiveness of these laws, identify challenges, and suggest improvements. The methodology involves a comprehensive review of national legislation, including the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (FSSA) and its associated regulations, alongside state-specific implementation practices in Tamil Nadu. The study examines the roles of various regulatory bodies, enforcement mechanisms, and recent initiatives undertaken by the Tamil Nadu Food Safety and Drug Administration Department. Key findings indicate that while the legal framework is comprehensive, challenges such as inadequate testing infrastructure, limited manpower, and low public awareness persist. The study concludes that enhancing capacity-building initiatives for regulatory officers, improving laboratory facilities, and increasing consumer awareness are critical for strengthening food safety enforcement in Tamil Nadu. This analysis underscores the importance of continuous improvement in regulatory practices to ensure the health and safety of the population.
