A Focus On Intellectual Property And Sustainable Development In The Field Of Agriculture: A Comparative Study On USA, Europe And Canada
L. Keerthana, Assistant Professor in VELS UNIVERSITY, Pallavaram, Chennai.
ABSTRACT
The term biotechnology has been defined as “the application of scientific & engineering principles to the processing of material by biological agents to provide goods and services". It additionally assists with creating novel items and bunches of significant value options for the agribusiness framework. Biological knowledge has already made a vastly important contribution to the health and welfare of humankind. Approximately 30% of global economic turnover is generated by healthcare, food, energy, agriculture, and forestry, and this economic impact will grow as biotechnology provides new ways of influencing raw material processing. The purpose of intellectual property rights in agricultural biotechnology is to identify genetically modified plants and animals through applied nucleic corrosive science and related advancements.
Biotechnology research in the field of agriculture has increased the production and propagation of new cultivated varieties of plants that have a direct role in agriculture practices in relation to nutritional quality. Important aspects of agro- biotechnology are micropropagation for biomass energy production, production of disease-free and disease-resistant plants, induction and selection of mutants resistant to pests, pathogens, and adverse soil conditions, improving nutritional quality, increased yield of chemical compounds, herbicides, etc. Current innovations like nano-biotechnology can play an imperative role in expanding and improving the nature of food, and fiber delivered by ranchers. They secure the developing requirements of the world just as they convey an immense scope of ecological maintainability, wellbeing, and financial benefits. Improvements on multiple occasions created strong incentives, and as a result, IPRs can be promoted for the sustainability of agriculture. IPR protection is important for biotechnology in agriculture because it creates additional incentives and
benefits.
